Editor’s Note: Cisco’s selection of the World’s Smartest Cities includes
Vienna, which is noted for its “Smart City Government.” Residents are provided
with free WiFi and a mobile app that enables them to report malfunctions anywhere in the city. Cisco’s enthusiasm for Smart Cities is evident in the imaginative descriptions that follow.
Not long ago, as night loomed in the world’s metropolises, forces of good had meager means for knowing what was happening on the streets below. Officials got by with crude communications – a spotlight to the sky; a dedicated telephone line from city hall to an underground bunker, where, in a time of need, one could hope the butler would be there to answer.
Today, a smart city can sense its own rhythm and pulse in real time, all the time. Sensors embedded in the fabric of the city stream data through networks to systems that analyze and observe. Mobile devices connect people to the city and the city to its people. When trouble arises, the city knows, and in an instant summon help. We are all watching as a new kind of metropolis emerges. These are... The Smartest Cities in the World.
Now, across smart cities, our hero SuperSmart must stop Dr. Analog, who has demanded $1 billion – or he’ll create global chaos by turning off all the world’s networks and making cities dumb again.
